LEGAL UNIT
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE LEGAL UNIT
The Legal Service Unit was created in 2003 by the Management of the National Institute for Nigerian Languages. The first Head of the Unit was Obiora Yagazie Esq. the Unit was directly under the registry and were administrative staff and not the legal officer.Â
However, following the scrapping of the Institute in 2007 and the subsequent restoration of the Institute in a landmark judgment of the Federal High Court Umuahia, in unit NO FCH /UM/CS/84/2007, it became necessary that the legal unit should function outside the staff of the registry and should be under the Executive director. The reason for the changes is that a legal office under the registry can only function as litigants and not a legal practitioner. The role played by the legal officer in that judgment led to the reorganization of the unit to take order from the chief executive (Executive Director). The total overhauling reform was carried out in 2015.
